1 Muharram 1446
By Moynul Islam Shah

As the sun sets on 6 July 2024, Muslims around the world will welcome the dawn of a new year in the Islamic calendar, marking the beginning of Muharram, the first month of the lunar Hijri calendar. This year, 7 July 2024, heralds the Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, a time of reflection, renewal, and spiritual contemplation.
Understanding Islamic New Year
Unlike the exuberant celebrations often associated with New Year in other cultures, the Islamic New Year is a more subdued and introspective occasion. It commemorates the Hijra, the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, an event that signifies the establishment of the first Muslim community and the start of the Islamic calendar.
Significance of Muharram
The month of Muharram holds great spiritual significance. It is one of the four sacred months in Islam during which warfare is prohibited, emphasizing peace and reflection. For many Muslims, this time is an opportunity to engage in additional prayers, fasting, and charitable activities.
One of the most significant days within Muharram is Ashura, the tenth day, which is observed with varying traditions across different Islamic sects. For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is a day of fasting, commemorating the day Moses and the Israelites were saved from Pharaoh. For Shia Muslims, it is a day of mourning, marking the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala.
Ways to Observe Islamic New Year
- Reflection and Prayer: Begin the New Year with personal reflection and extra prayers. It’s a time to seek forgiveness, set spiritual goals, and renew your faith.
- Charity and Good Deeds: Engage in acts of charity and kindness. Helping those in need is a core tenet of Islam and a meaningful way to start the year.
- Fasting: Consider fasting on the days leading up to Ashura or on the day itself, following the traditions of Prophet Muhammad.
- Family Time: Spend time with family and loved ones, sharing stories of the Hijra and the lessons it imparts.
- Education and Remembrance: Learn about the history and significance of the Hijra, and participate in community events or lectures that delve deeper into Islamic history and teachings.
A Time for Renewal
Islamic New Year is not just a change in the calendar; it is a profound moment to renew one’s faith and commitment to Islamic principles. It serves as a reminder of the trials faced by early Muslims and the importance of perseverance, unity, and trust in Allah.
As we step into the year 1446 AH (Anno Hegirae), may it bring peace, blessings, and spiritual growth to all. Let us embrace this time of reflection and renewal, carrying forward the lessons of the past to build a more compassionate and just future.
Wishing everyone a blessed and peaceful Islamic New Year!
May Allah bless you
